The Perfect Transitional Coat

I received the L.L. Barn Coat for Christmas back in 2017. I have worn it through Fall, Spring, and now I’m back at it again. It’s my reach for coat on a day that’s slightly chilly, and there are several features that make it *the* coat I go for in my closet. For starters, I love the khaki color – I find it to be really versatile and it goes with an array of sweaters and tops. But, it also comes in a lovely deep green that is comparable to Jake’s field coat. In general, the field coat is a very similar coat, but I love the more feminine cut of the barn coat. It pulls in only slightly, giving it a less baggy look.

Lipstick color is 9-5 by Beauty Counter – a new absolute favorite of mine! The perfect shade for everyone – not too dark but enough to say “I’m gonna own today.”

I have always loved the fit of the Barn Coat. It already feels broken in when you buy it, and has plenty of room for layering. I wore my J.Crew 1988 roll neck sweater, which was the perfect weight for walking around Stamford this past weekend  – it was about 40 degrees! I opted for the flannel lined version of the coat just to add that extra amount of warmth, and I typically keep the sleeves cuffed to feature the corduroy cuffs – matching perfectly with the collar! I find this coat to be essential for that weird transitional season between winter and spring – something that’s particularly prominent in New England at the moment. I know this jacket doesn’t have the ease of a zipper, but I love the buttons because, with this coat, I often keep it opened to feature whatever I am wearing underneath. I thin having those big brown buttons with an open coat really adds to the whole outfit! Plus, even when it’s buttoned, I think it has a classic/rustic look that makes me feel like I’m a member of the royal family on a hunting trip…is that weird….?

One time, I got the entire sleeve covered in dirt and mud when walking around on a rainier day (I must have leaned on the side of a building…ugh.) and I panicked about it getting all over my favorite coat. I mean, the whole sleeve was covered in grime and I really wasn’t sure if I would be able to get it out. However, as per usual with L.L. Bean, the barn coat is made of quality material that is meant to last. I was able to machine wash the coat, and the stain came right out. This coat can also be paired with some tall, green, hunter rain boots – because this coat is also water repellent! I have worn the coat when it is both drizzling and full on raining – of course, I don’t like to be soaking wet (it’s not a rain jacket, let’s be honest…) but I don’t mind wearing it on a rainy day.

After over a year of wearing the coat, I cannot recommend it more. It’s been featured it tons of my posts, and I felt it deserved some singled out recognition. As an owner of (too many) coats, this is one I know I will never give up to my Poshmark closet!
