Folklore

It’s no surprise that I’m absolutely thrilled with Taylor’s album, Folklore. It’s obviously different than her last few Pop albums, but it’s also exactly the type of cathartic album I needed right now. The pandemic has been such an emotional roller coaster, and the fact that she wrote the whole thing during her quarantine (my god, I need to do more…) is unbelievably impressive to me. All of the songs are really thought provoking, which I love.

As always, I have my favorites on the album. My songs I’ve been playing on repeat are:

  • The 1
  • Cardigan
  • The last great American Dynasty
  • August
  • Illicit Affairs
  • Invisible String
  • Betty
  • Peace
  • Hoax

I have no idea how to narrow it down to my top 5 because I just can’t stop rotating through these! I guess it if I had to choose at this very moment: Invisible String, The 1, August, Peace, and Betty. Ahhhh, but I can’t commit yet to that!

Pj, Jake and I at the Red tour – 7  years ago today!

I really love how every song tells a story. She’s so very good at that and it’s something that really stands out on this album. It reminds me of how I used to feel in early high school when Fearless came out. Many of the songs felt fairytale like for me at the time…then of course, Speak Now had plenty of that too right after that. Then Red….it’s definitely her niche!

There are so many theories about what all of the songs are about. I particularly love the history behind her Watch Hill house and the woman, Rebekah, who lived there. I think it really shows a lot of the history of the town and how Rebekah, and by extension Taylor, doesn’t care what others think of her. I’m also a huge fan of the teenage trio songs…she’s so good at telling the story from multiple perspectives.

This is the kind of album that makes me want to sing again, to be perfectly honest. Maybe it’s time to give that part of me a little more love again…?
