When Family Comes to the City

This past weekend, my little sister Sam came with me to spend the weekend in the city. Even though I technically don’t *live* there right now, it still feels like home, and we had so much fun hanging out in Jake’s apartment and exploring the city. It also happened to be the weekend for March for Our Lives, which I’m a huge advocate for, so participating was extremely important to me.

Luckily, Saturday was in the high forties, so I was finally able to pull out my L.L. Bean Barn Coat that my parents got me for Christmas. I’ve been wanting to wear this for so long – it’s such a classic. I’m sure you’ll be seeing me in it a lot more now that we are finally in Spring! I paired it with my J. Crew denim dress, striped turtleneck, tights and boots (all J. Crew!). For more details on this denim look, check out this blog post.

My sister Sam is a political science major at Quinnipiac University, so it’s pretty easy for her to take the train into the city. I’m really looking forward to having an apartment there again so she can visit all the time! She also happens to be a huge Law & Order SVU fan, and therefore Olivia Benson is pretttttty much her hero. Naturally, we had to get a picture of her in front of the supreme court building.

We also pretty much catered to Sam’s favorite foods: Pizza and Burgers. Over the course of the weekend, we had both Five Napkin Burger (the upper west side location!) and Patsy’s. Personally, I’m not a huge burger fan, but the turkey burger at Five Napkin is so much lighter, with red peppers and mozzarella, and I really enjoyed it. As far as Patsy’s go: take everyone there. It’s in Harlem and one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been. Jake and I had a date night there once, and I cannot think of a better experience. Personally, the margherita pizza is my absolute favorite paired with their refreshing caesar salad. Go go go go there for sure! (Just remember it’s cash only!)

We also did one of NYC’s best tourist attractions: Top of the Rock. I personally always recommend this, because you get such an amazing view of the city. If you want to pay a little extra, you can get a tour as well. It’s obviously NBC, so I found it perfect for my Law & Order sister. We had so much fun taking pictures, and pointing out different places in the city. It’s something you can do in the middle of the day, or late at night.

This was such a good choice for the three of us because, to be honest, we were feeling a bit tired after experiencing the emotions of the march and walking around the city. It really was an energy booster to see the architecture from so high above, and I will do this over and over again with all my family members in the future. It’s a unique experience that I recommend to anyone stopping in.

I’m really thankful that the three of us are so close and that we were able to spend an entire weekend together experiencing my favorite city. We ended Saturday night with pizza and crime shows (for sure go watch the Amanda Knox documentary on Netflix if you haven’t already….), and I’m so grateful. <3
